5 Lessons I Learned on My Journey to Staying Consistent with Nutrition and Fitness

Consistency has always been the key to success, but it’s also the hardest part to master. For years, I struggled to find my footing in health and fitness. I felt overwhelmed by all the diets, workouts, and advice out there. It felt impossible to stick with anything for more than a few weeks, and I often found myself back at square one. But eventually, I discovered an approach that worked for me—one that prioritized progress over perfection and balanced nutrition with a realistic fitness routine. Today, I’m sharing the five biggest lessons I’ve learned on my journey to staying consistent. My hope is that these lessons inspire you to take the next step in your own journey.

Lesson 1: Progress Over Perfection

When I first started, I thought being healthy meant doing everything perfectly: eating "clean" 100% of the time, never skipping a workout, and hitting every goal flawlessly. But this mindset left me feeling defeated every time I slipped up. The turning point came when I embraced the idea that progress is more important than perfection.

Consistency doesn’t mean being perfect; it means showing up more often than not. If I missed a workout or indulged in my favorite treat, I learned to move on without guilt. Instead of aiming for perfection, I focused on doing my best each day. Over time, those small, imperfect actions added up to big results.

Lesson 2: Home Workouts Became My Sanctuary

I used to dread the gym. It felt intimidating, crowded, and far from enjoyable. I mean who wants to workout next to sweaty strangers???? That all changed when I discovered home workouts. They gave me the freedom to move at my own pace, without worrying about who was watching or if I was using the "right" equipment.

Home workouts became my sanctuary—a safe space where I could focus on myself. I started small, with just 20 minutes a day and a set of 5lb dumbbells, and gradually built up. Whether it was cardio, strength training, or a quick boxing workout, having the flexibility to exercise at home made it easier to stay consistent. Over time, I learned to actually enjoy working out, and it became a part of my daily routine.

Lesson 3: Healing My Relationship with Food Through Mindful Eating

For years, my relationship with food was complicated. I saw food as either "good" or "bad," and I often felt guilty after eating something I "shouldn’t" have. This all-or-nothing thinking kept me stuck in a cycle of restriction and overindulgence.

Mindful eating was a game-changer. I started paying attention to my hunger cues, eating without distractions, and truly savoring my meals. This approach helped me break free from food guilt and taught me to listen to my body. Over time, I shifted my focus from restricting foods to nourishing my body.

Lesson 4: Fueling My Body with Macros

After healing my relationship with food, I began focusing on how to fuel my body for energy and strength. That’s when I discovered the power of macros. Tracking my macronutrients (protein, carbs, and fats) gave me a clearer picture of how to balance my meals and support my goals.

What I love about focusing on macros is that it’s not about deprivation. It’s about making intentional choices that fuel my body and make me feel good. For example, I prioritize plenty of protein and fiber-rich carbs throughout the day, while avoiding heavy carbs at dinner to align with my energy needs. This balance has allowed me to stay consistent without feeling restricted.

As I began fueling my body with intention, I noticed an incredible shift in how I felt. My energy improved, my workouts became stronger, and I started to truly love the way I was feeling in my own skin. What made this journey even more meaningful was seeing how my progress inspired other women. Their questions, support, and encouragement motivated me to take things a step further. I wanted to help others in a deeper way, so I decided to go back to school to become a nutritionist. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, allowing me to combine my passion for health with my desire to guide others on their journeys.

Lesson 5: Building Consistency Through Accountability

If there’s one thing that’s kept me going when motivation wanes, it’s accountability. Having a support system—whether it’s a workout buddy, a coach, or a community—makes all the difference.

That’s why I’ve created spaces like my Free Wellness Club and my Faster Way accountability group. These communities are designed to provide daily check-ins, encouragement, and practical resources to help you stay on track. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for support to take your routine to the next level, accountability is one of the most powerful tools for building lasting habits.

Conclusion

These lessons didn’t come all at once, and they weren’t always easy to learn. But each one has played a vital role in helping me stay consistent with my health and fitness. If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, remember: it’s not about being perfect. It’s about finding what works for you and taking one small step at a time.
